Morning Glories in '98


*Following flowers are my morning glories in '98.


"Sun smile" : Dwarf type

"Sun smile" is dwarf type morning glory.
They has very short vine and variegated leaves.
Maximum length of their vine is only 70cm.
So, we can enjoy them like a petunia or marigold in the garden.
Diameter of flower is about 8cm.



"Kikyo" : Star shaped flower

"Kikyo" mean a Chinese bellflower in English.
Their flower is like bellflower. So, they are called "Kikyo".
Diameter of flower is about 5cm.
But, bloom stays open 2 days in late summer.



"Yojiro" : Ray white flower

"Yojiro" type is hybrid between Ipomoea Nil and I. Purpurea.
Dr. Yoneda developed this type.
Their white pinwheel and margined pattern is beautiful.
They are strong and good for a fence or a lattice.



"Beni-chidori" : Miniature type

"Beni-chidori" is miniature type morning glory.
Diameter of flower is only 3cm.
Japanese people love these miniature flowers.



"Botan" : Formally double flower

"Botan" mean a tree peony in English.
Their stamens and pistil change to petals.
So, "Botan" is seedless morning glory.



"Yanagi-ba" : Willow-leaf

Only one gene (willow) change anything of plant.
Its leaves are like willow and flowers are like frames.
This mutation morning glory also produce no seed.


*How to get the seeds of seedless morning glory.
The sisters of seedless morning glory could produce many seeds.
They look normal, but some of them has a recessive gene.
So, some sisters will produce seedless varieties in the next year.
It is the most important technique for the mutation morning glories.
